Philippines nominated for the BBC World Challenge!

The World Challenge is a global competition aimed at finding projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at the grassroots level. This year, a Bacolod’s Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. (AIDFI) has been named one of 12 finalists in the BBC World Challenge 2010.

Jinoe and I were in a SM Bacolod, waiting to meet some friends when we saw this.

AIDIF Hydraulic Ram Pump
This is a project perfected by AIDIF, was selected out of more than 800 nominations worldwide. It’s an indigenous hydraulic ram pump that brings water to remote hillside villages without the use of electricity. It uses the power of a river’s flow to push water uphill to supply water to villagers living in mountainous regions.

In the Philippines, the foundation has installed ram pumps in 170 upland villages benefiting 50,000 people with free flowing water. It has also transferred its technology to countries like Afghanistan and Nepal.

You can help support AIDFI’s project to receive US$20,000 grant by voting for them online! Voting is ongoing until midnight (GMT) of November 12, 2010.

Vote for AIDFI, make the Philippines proud and help provide water to more upland communities!
